Terms of Use and Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 3, 2026
1. Purpose of the service
The “Sunory” application (the “Application”) works out the sun's course for the place where the user stands: sun position, sunrise and sunset, twilight, golden hour and blue hour. The information it provides is for guidance only.
2. Accuracy and safety
The Application's calculations rest on published astronomical formulas, cited in the Application (“Calculations and sources” screen). They are estimates: terrain, buildings, weather and altitude are not taken into account, and precision drops near the poles. The publisher cannot be held liable for decisions made on the basis of this information (photography, outdoor activities, navigation, etc.).
Never look directly at the sun, nor through the camera, the Application's 3D view, binoculars or any optical instrument: it can cause serious and permanent eye damage.
3. Purchase and trial
Today's dial is free. The rest of the Application (3D view, horizon surveys, sunshine report, compass and sun map, other dates, reminders) is unlocked by a one-time purchase, with no subscription, at the price shown in the Application and in the store.
On iPhone, a free 7-day trial can be started once per Apple account. It triggers no payment: when it ends, only today's dial stays open, until a purchase. Horizon surveys saved during the trial stay on the phone.
Payment is handled by Apple's App Store or Google Play, under their terms, which also govern refund requests. The purchase is tied to your store account: you can restore it from the Application ("Restore purchases"), including after a reinstall or on another device of the same account.
4. Privacy and personal data (GDPR)
We take the privacy of your data extremely seriously:
- No collection: the Application asks for no sign-up, no name and no email address.
- Location: if you allow it, the Application reads your phone's approximate location, only while you use it (never in the background), and only to work out the sun's course. An approximate location is enough: on Android, the Application only asks for approximate location. The calculations run on your phone. Your location is neither stored nor sent to the publisher or third parties: it is read again each time the Application opens. There are two exceptions: the approximate location of a horizon survey you choose to save, and loading the sun map, which asks Mapbox for the images of the area around your location (see below). You can withdraw access at any time in your phone's settings.
- Camera: if you allow it, the 3D view shows the rear camera image to lay the sun's course over it, only while that screen is open. The image is only displayed: it is neither recorded, nor analysed, nor sent to the publisher or third parties. The Application does not use the microphone. You can withdraw access at any time in your phone's settings.
- Horizon surveys: if you trace the line of the rooftops, trees or hills around you, the Application saves, on your phone only, the name you give it, the date, angles (the height of the horizon in each direction) and a location rounded to about a hundred metres, to find the survey again at the same place. No image is saved. Nothing is sent to the publisher or third parties: there is no account and no server. You can delete a survey at any time from the Application; it is then erased from the phone.
- Phone location service: the location comes from your phone's system (Apple on iPhone, Google on most Android phones), under its own privacy rules; the Application adds no data to it.
- Sun map: the map is provided by Mapbox. To show it, your phone downloads from Mapbox the images of the area you are looking at (at first, around your location), under Mapbox's privacy rules. Mapbox's usage statistics are turned off: the Application sends nothing else to Mapbox; the spot you tap on the map is not saved.
- Reminders: if you ask to be told about a moment (a sunset, the sun reaching a place), the Application saves on your phone the event, its time, the chosen lead and, where relevant, the name of the survey concerned. The notification is scheduled by your phone's system: it goes through no server, and nothing is sent to the publisher or to third parties. You can delete a reminder at any time from the Application; a past reminder is erased.
- Purchases: the purchase goes through the App Store or Google Play, and the iPhone trial through the App Store; these stores process the payment under their own privacy rules. The Application receives no payment data: it only asks the store, on your phone, whether the purchase or the trial has been made and on which date, and keeps that answer on the phone. Nothing is sent to the publisher.
- Local storage: only your settings (the Application's language, onboarding already seen), your horizon surveys and your reminders are saved, on your phone only. Like the rest of your apps' data, they may be included in backups of your phone that you make yourself (for example iCloud).
- Error reports: when the Application runs into an error or closes unexpectedly, a technical report is sent to Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.), our error tracking tool, hosted in the European Union. The report describes the error (message, where in the code it happened, phone model and system, version of the Application). It contains neither your location, nor the camera image, nor your horizon surveys, nor your IP address, nor any identifier that could recognize you. It is used only to fix errors, and Sentry keeps it for 30 days at most.
- No other sharing: apart from loading the map and the error reports described above, the Application sends no data to the publisher or to third parties. It contains no advertising and no analytics.
- External links: the “Calculations and sources” screen opens third-party pages (scientific publications) in your phone's built-in browser. Those sites have their own privacy rules; the Application sends them no data.
- Deletion: deleting the Application from your phone permanently and immediately deletes all of its data. A purchase, however, stays tied to your store account and can be restored.
5. Governing law
These terms are governed by French law. Any dispute relating to the use of the Application falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the French courts.
